MAKE THE TIME – MEMORIAL DAY 2017
In keeping with previous Memorial Day posts, I will keep this short. Less is always more when speaking of heroes and those no longer with us.
Everyone has their own reasons for choosing to serve. Some choose for tangible benefits: Training and education. Solid pay. Generous benefits. Others choose to serve for the intangible benefits that can be difficult to find outside the military: Adventure. Patriotism. Leadership. Discipline. The opportunity to travel, experience unique cultures, meet new people, and kill them (one of my favorite bumper stickers). A desire to become part of something that is bigger than themselves. Ask 100 service members the reason they joined and you could get 100 different answers.
Since the beginning of our history over 1,100,000 patriots have given their lives so that we may live ours. If we could ask every one of those brave souls the reason they were willing to, time and time again, put their lives on the line knowing that one day their number may get called and the answer to the man, would be nearly identical: “This is the greatest country the world has ever seen. It is worth fighting for.” If we could ask everyone of those brave souls the reason that they gave their life, the answer would be: “I gave my life for the guy next to me, for my buddy.”
In the time it takes to blink an eye, take a breath, steal a kiss, share a hug, say I love you, give a reassuring pat on the back, commit to a goal, extend a hand, say yes to a competition, help a friend, or walk into the gym, they chose to give it all away. Our heroes knowingly said goodbye to “making time”. In one final act of selflessness they gave us their tomorrows so that we might live today.
This memorial day, enjoy your family. Enjoy your freedom. Laugh and love. Share stories and good food. And for all your remaining days make the time, today. It is the greatest way to commemorate our heroes.
